This project was the idea of my wife and since she’s been very understanding about me taking over the garage and spending hundreds on tools (with very little to show for it so far) I think it’s prudent to accept the challenge!
The brief is to build a long low storage solution to live under the (rather low) windowsill in the lounge to hold toys, DVDs, computer games, magazines and all the other assorted junk we surround ourselves with!
We think something a bit like this (on its side) is what’s required, but the single version would be too low and the double version would be too high, hence our thoughts turning to the DIY option.
Ikea sell various inserts, including baskets, drawers and I think even doors to convert the sections into cupboards and this gave my wife the idea of buying some boxes first and having me build the storage to accept them as “drawers”.
Depending on the size of the boxes she ends up with, I may add a shelf above them to bring the unit up level with the windowsill, or just build the unit on a low pedestal (a bit like kickboard under a kitchen cabinet).
I’d better order some veneered MDF in preparation …

Hi Olly,
Yes I’m pretty good at planning things out in my head, but I really need to work on the delivery!
Watch this space 🙂

Sounds like you’ve got this one fairly well planned out, John. I look forward to seeing it progress.
